Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is a common highly infectious sexually transmitted infection, caused by bacteria that can infect the cervix, urethra, rectum, anus or throat.
Transmission
Gonorrhoea is easily spread through any form of sex including oral sex. It can also be transmitted from mother to baby, which may cause an eye infection that can be treated with antibiotics.
Signs and symptoms
Women
- Discomfort when passing urine
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Irritation/discharge from the anus.
Men
- Discharge from the penis
- Pain when passing urine
- Swelling/pain in the testes
- Irritation/discharge from the anus.
Treatment
Gonorrhoea is easily treated by short course of antibiotics. It is essential to abstain from sex until all recent sexual contacts are tested and have completed treatment.
