Genital Warts

Genital warts are very common, caused by a virus called the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and can affect men or women equally.

The majority of people will be exposed to the wart virus but not everyone will develop genital warts.

Transmission

The wart virus is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact.

Signs and symptoms

Warts can appear as small fleshy lumps anywhere on the genitals including:

  • Vulva
  • Vagina
  • Cervix
  • Penis
  • In and around the anus.

Warts are not painful but sometimes can cause irritation.

Treatment

Warts can be treated by either the use of cryotherapy (freezing) on a weekly basis in clinic or creams can be prescribed which are used at home.

Genital warts can take several weeks to resolve.

Treatment will clear the visible warts but the virus remains in the skin therefore they may reappear.
