Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types – HSV 1 and HSV 2.

HSV 1 usually causes cold sores on the mouth or lips. Both can cause genital sores.

It usually causes painful blistering and ulceration around the penis, vagina or anus.

It is a common sexually transmitted infection.

Some people can have the herpes virus without having any obvious symptoms.

Signs and symptoms

  • Itching and irritation
  • Painful ulcers
  • Dysuria
  • Vaginal or urethral discharge
  • Flu-like viral symptoms
  • Swollen glands in the groins.

Transmission

All forms of sexual contact including oral sex can transmit herpes. The risk of transmission is much greater when blisters or sores are present.

Treatment

There is no cure for genital herpes. Tablets are available to treat the symptoms and are most effective if taken as early as possible following the onset of symptoms. As with facial cold sores, genital herpes can reoccur for the majority of people. The symptoms are mild and only last for a short period of time. Symptoms can be improved by:

  • Painkillers
  • Saline bathing
  • Passing urine into a bath or bowl of warm water to avoid urine touching the broken skin
  • Rest.
