Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis is not sexually transmitted and does not affect men.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a very common vaginal infection. It occurs when bacteria that normally exist in small numbers in the vagina multiply rapidly. BV mainly occurs in women who regularly have sex. The infection does not get passed on to the man.

Signs and Symptoms

Some women may not have any symptoms. You may have heavier discharge which is an off white colour and may smell ‘fishy’, especially after sexual intercourse. You may possibly be sore or have an irritation around or inside the vagina.

Transmission

As the cause of Bacterial Vaginosis is unknown there are some measures women should adopt which may reduce their chances of getting Bacterial Vaginosis:

  • Keep the vaginal area clean and dry.
  • Avoid using bubble bath and soaps.
  • Avoid vaginal douches.
  • Always wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
  • Use condoms

Treatment

Women will be prescribed a course of specific antibiotics.
