What is it?
GHB (gamma-hyrdoxybutyrate) is a synthetically produced drug. It is used medicinally in some countries for many different reasons including as an anaesthetic muscle relaxant, antidepressant and muscle growth stimulant and to help people sleep. It comes either in powder or liquid form.
What are the effects?
The effects of GHB can vary depending on the dose that is taken and getting the right dose can be a bit of a problem. At low doses the effect is similar to alcohol, taking effect within five to 20 minutes, and lasts for up to three hours, and lasts for up to 3 hours. Quite small increases in the dose can lead to dramatic changes in its effects. High doses will lead to you being ‘knocked out’, putting you in a deep unrousable sleep.
What are the risks?
GHB is a very dose dependant drug and getting a safe or correct dose is a real problem, as there is no way of knowing the concentration of any powder or liquid that you buy. GHB lowers blood pressure, slows the heart rate and can cause muscle contractions and seizures. High doses can also lead to unconsciousness and vomiting, which can be fatal. GHB has been linked as a ‘date rape’ drug and spiking someone’s drink with GHB has the potential to kill him or her.
The law
GHB is a class C drug. It is illegal to have, sell or give away.
