Phobias

Many people suffer from extreme fear of specific objects, such as spiders or snakes, or fear of situations such as fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), or many other things.

This fear can be quite extreme and may lead to panic attacks and physical symptoms. Often this can spiral into “avoidant” behaviour, where you may find yourself planning your life around avoiding the uncomfortable situation, which only leads to an increased fear of it.

Common symptoms may include:-

  • “Avoidant” behaviour
  • Panic attacks
  • Shaking and Sweating
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fast heart beat

Counselling can help you reconsider ways of coping with a difficult situation and allow you to live your life more resourcefully. A counsellor can also help you to examine and explore some of the underlying causes of the anxiety and deal with the root cause. Many people suffering from phobias may also develop problems with low self-esteem which can also be tackled in the sessions.
